Nottingham June 2010

Wow!  What a totally brilliant event!  Today's competition was a true landmark in Nightflyer's history as Charlotte became our first national competitor by winning her Grade D event with a high scoring performance.  As if that wasn't enough, the rest of the team also put in some amazing routines to deliver our best competition results for three years.

Lucas started the medal tally with a great pair of routines to win his group by a significant margin with a qualifying score of 45.90.
Hot on his heels, Hollie just managed to edge into first place against some very strong competition in the U11Gs, again with a qualifying score of 45.90.  I've never seen someone so happy cry so much - and that was just her mum!
Meanwhile, over on panel 1, Sophie was in a close battle with Natasha (Valley Springs) for 5th place, just missing out on the tie break.
Back to panel 3 where the boys were competing grade G.  The usually ultra-reliable Kieran had a couple of summie problems which put him out of contention, leaving Jamil and Finley to try to take on the rest of the very wide age group.  They came away with team medals for their efforts - well done.
Onto panel 4 next, where our under 11 grade H girls did brilliantly.  Millie had a bit of trouble with her backdrop but kept smiling all the way through.  Emma put in a great performance to come second, but was just pipped by Jodie, who won the group and acheived a qualifying score.  The girls' first place team result was all the more amazing when you consider this was the first competition for both Jodie and Millie.

Meanwhile on panel 3, Katie and Lucy were very convincing in the U15 grade F.  This time round, Katie kept her crashes to her warmups, which meant she finished both routines and qualified only just outside the medals in 4th place. Lucy was very tidy and finished a couple of places behind.
Shortly after, Rebecca overcame her initial nerves to put in a couple of neat routines and finished only just below the qualifying score in a closely competed group.
The first of the afternoon competitors were our team of first-timers in the U11 grade H.  They each did a great job - Amy and Jade just ahead in the first round and Grace pulling back in the second - to finish well up the rankings in a large group of 29 entrants. Amy was only 0.4 points behind 3rd place. They certainly deserved their 1st place team medals.
On the next trampoline, our under 13 grade Gs were competing next.  Jasmin had high expectations here, but sadly a couple of errors on her summies pushed her down the rankings - her score does show how good the rest of her routine was though.  Just to keep her company, the other team members played along and grouped their positions around her! It was still enough to give all a team medal to take home though. Let's show them what you can really do next time eh?
The afternoon sessions continued with Madeline in the U15G, where an unfortunate error in her first routine put her out of contention.
The undoubted highlight for the whole club was still to come though.  Charlotte has been steadily working her way up the grade D rankings over the past year and has recently put in a tremendous amount of extra training.  Becky led the way in the U19 grade Ds - and promptly bottled both of her ball-outs!  Charlotte more than compensated though, with a brilliantly controlled pair of routines to put her at the top of the group with a guaranteed qualifying score too.  The next event she can compete at won't be until next year now, but that'll give her time to sort out her rudi.
For those of you who have been with the club for only a short time it is hard to understand what an important step this is.  Over the past few years we've had a number of competitors who have got up to grade D ( or equivalent) but never quite made it past that point.  Charlotte's achievement puts Night Flyers on the national circuit now - it's like being promoted to the premier league!  She deserves the highest praise for the consistent effort she has put in, as do Toni and Helen for being so crucial to her success.  Now that she's shown it can be done, let's see some more of you following on!
As usual, huge thanks to everyone who helped out - Keith on computers, Tracey and Peter for judging (also first timers!), Jo and all the parents and members who made the event such a success. Thanks also to the volunteers from all the other clubs.  I've got about 300 photos to sort out now, so they'll be appearing here over the next week or so.
Night Flyers results are below, with the full results available for download in Excel format by clicking here.
See you at the next comp in October!
